Prostate Screening Day 2025

Frome Lions in conjunction with the Somerset Prostate Support Association (SPSA) recently held a free PSA testing event at the Masonic Hall Frome on the 29 March.

A PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test is a blood test that looks for markers of prostate cancer or prostate abnormalities. A ‘red’ result means a higher than normal antigen count and could indicate that a higher risk of prostate cancer is present.

A PSA test alone is not conclusive; however it can be instrumental in early detection of cancer.

236 men were tested at the event on the 29 March, 12 of whom, we are now aware, were given a ‘red’ result and 8 received an amber result.

All those attending the event were advised to have further tests if their PSA result indicated a higher risk. Whilst it is up to each person to arrange further tests, Frome Lions would like to think that we have helped those men as they would not have known about the risks without the test.
