Frome Lion Awarded International Presidents Leadership Medal
At the 2025 Lions Multiple District 105 convention held at Llandudno in May, Frome Lion Tony Buchan was presented with an International President’s Leadership Medal by past International President Brian Sheenan.
In his over twenty years as a Lion Tony has held various posts at club, District & Multiple District level including being District Governor of 105W in 2014.
In 2016 Tony took on the post of Multiple District Officer for Physical & Learning Difficulties and it was for this that he received his award. Soon after the beginning of his term of office, he became aware that there was no general Disability Policy. It was apparent that the UK Disability Discrimination Act 2005 (now superseded by the Equality Act) was written in the form of an advisory document. Further investigations revealed that legislation varied from country to country, but there was no general document to provide guidance to Lions Clubs regarding the safety of Lions and members of the public who have Physical & Learning Difficulties. Through PDG Tony’s persistence, Past Council Chairperson (PCC) Philip Goodier took a detailed look at the UK Legislation and definitions provided by Lions Clubs International about Associations and Clubs. PDG Tony and a number of other Lions with experience and knowledge of various disabilities put together and completed a comprehensive Disability Policy in 2021 which is now used by Lions Clubs across the British Isles.”
