Operation Haybale

Frome Lions Club have been active locally for 54 years now and ‘Haybale’ is one of our longest running fundraising events – a bit of an unsung hero.

The basic principle when it was launched was that the Lions Club would ask farmers who grow hay each year to donate some hay(bales) and then the Lions would sell these bales to other farmers who require hay but don’t grow some themselves – the resultant money generated going to a specific charity each year.

Throughout the 30-odd years that Haybale has been running – raising over £20,000 – the local farming community have always generously supported it and although fewer farms now make hay, we still collect & transport some bales each year, and in place of the haybale itself, many farmers now donate cash each year instead.

The great news is that unlike many of our other events this year, we have been able continue with Operation Haybale and the amount raised this year is in course to be a record, with the funds going towards supporting FarmWell.

FarmWell is a one-stop online resources hub to help farmers and farm businesses stay strong and resilient through periods of change, including support for families and staff.

So, I would like to record our thanks to all those farmers who have supported this event through the years and again this year.
